Project Overview
Baktisiswa 2014 will be carried out from 23rd to 28th August at Kampung Naradang, which is a remote village at Kudat, Sabah. Among the 13 states, Sabah is chosen as we realized that the awareness of the rural population in Sabah is generally lower than that of the general population of the Peninsula. All 70 participants of this program are second year medical students of the University of Malaya. This program aims to increase the awareness of the rural population towards the importance of personal health and hygiene, which are often neglected by the villagers of Sabah who are marginalized from globalized urban development.
Our theme
We share a love, to care and serve.
This is what we do...
1. Medical check-up
The check-up covers body mass index, blood glucose level, cholesterol level, and vision test. This will be done under the guidance and supervision of lecturers from the medical faculty of the Universiti Malaya.

2. Health exhibition
Posters, charts and diagrams conveying the relevant information of leading a healthy lifestyle will be displayed. A seminar of the relevant health topics, such as the importance of a balanced diet, the benefits of regular physical exercise, and etc. will be given. Furthermore, there will be a CPR and first-aid demonstration to the villagers.
3. School visit and motivational talk
Motivational talks will be given to the primary school students of SK Sikuati to motivate them to aim high in their lives and to encourage them to lead a healthy lifestyle. This will be delivered by our own participants.

4. ‘Keluarga Angkat’ program
Each participant will be assigned to a foster family (Keluarga Angkat). We will stay with the ‘keluarga angkat’ during the entire duration of the program. We will be exposed to the culture and tradition of the local community.
We will achieve this...
1. The villagers of Kampung Naradang will understand the importance of leading a healthy lifestyle and how to. They will realize the importance of dietary control, the imporatnce of having adequate physical exercise and regular medical check-ups.
2. The students of SK Sikuati will understand that anything is achievable, provided they have a clear goal and the willingness and the determination to work towards their goal.
3. The participants of Baktisiswa will have a better understanding towards the health condition of the rural population in Sabah. They will be able to develop empathy, which is very important for the future doctors.
We are raising fund like this...
We will be organizing a Baktisiswa charity concert at the end of May within UM campus (tentatively on 23rd May). In addition we offer merchandise, namely our exclusive wrist-band and t-shirt.

“We share a love, to care and serve”
